Focus on Phoenix Rising
One of the big successes of the Black History Month event we ran on 30 October was Phoenix Rising, a group of young steel pan drummers. We spoke to group leader and pianist Patrick on Saturday to find out more about how the group started and what they do.
Speaking to us, he said: “The organisation is there to raise self-awareness and self-esteem of young people. We get them in and keep them on track. We help them achieve in whatever they want to do. If they want to learn music, we teach them music.”
Talking about why the steel pan drums are such a great way to engage with young people, Patrick added: “Steel pan is a great vessel to teach music. It teaches co-operation, patience and respect. Those are the main things we use when working with young people. We also do a lot of community engagement activity. Phoenix Rising is there for the community.”
