Remembering our founder Hadiya Masieh
Following yesterday's tragic passing of our founder and friend Hadiya Masieh, we have been remembering what she stood for and cared about.
Hadiya was a remarkable woman whose life’s work was grounded in care for people and a deep belief in the power of communities to prevent harm. For over 22 years, she worked in community cohesion, interfaith relations, and counter-extremism to cultivate resilience and empower individuals.
Her vision was clear: safer societies are built through connection, understanding, and support. She believed that hate and polarisation take root where people feel isolated — and that strong, compassionate communities are the most powerful response.
At Groundswell, we are committed to carrying the torch, ensuring that Hadiya’s vision continues to guide and shape our work. We will continue to (a) build stronger, more resilient communities where people feel supported, connected, and protected from harm, (b) deliver critical training and awareness workshops for frontline workers and young people, and (c) promote the type of financial resilience that allows communities to stand on their own.
Hadiya understood deeply that when people feel connected and empowered, communities are better equipped to resist division. That understanding remains the bedrock of our organisation.
We carry Hadiya’s vision forward with gratitude and determination. Her work lives on in every connection strengthened, every person supported, and every community made safer through care.
